Description

Air fryer crispy onions are a delicious and healthy alternative to deep-fried onions. They are golden, crunchy, and flavorful, perfect for topping casseroles, burgers, salads, or as a snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large yellow or sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil spray

Instructions

  1. Place the sliced onions in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Toss to coat and let them soak for 15 to 30 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Remove the onions from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, and dredge them in the flour mixture until well coated.
  4. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil spray.
  5. Place the coated onions in a single layer in the basket. Work in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding.
  6. Spray the tops of the onions lightly with oil and air fry at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until golden and crispy.
  7. Let them cool slightly before using. They will continue to crisp up a bit as they cool.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline or very sharp knife for evenly thin onion slices, which ensures they cook and crisp evenly.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a quick substitute by mixing 1/2 cup milk with 1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Re-crisp in the air fryer for a few minutes if needed.
  • Perfect for topping green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, or any dish that could use a savory crunch.
