Description

This apple crumb cake is a perfectly sweet and moist dessert, featuring fresh apples, cinnamon, and a delicious brown sugar pecan topping. It’s a comforting, classic recipe that’s easy to make and can be enjoyed for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup buttermilk OR sour milk
  • 2 cups apples peeled & chopped (I used Gala)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup pecans chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add the cinnamon and vanilla extract and mix well.
  4. To the creamed butter, add the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
  5. Stir in the apples.
  6. Pour the apple crumb cake batter into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
  7. Combine the topping ingredients (brown sugar, chopped pecans, and cinnamon) and sprinkle evenly over the top of the apple crumb cake.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 40-50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the apple crumb cake comes out clean.

Notes

  • To make buttermilk: Combine 1 Tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar with 1 cup milk.
  • Recipe Variations:
  • Use any variety of apples, chopped or grated.
  • Substitute whole wheat or gluten free flour for all-purpose.
  • Add ground nutmeg, ginger, or cardamom OR use apple pie spice instead of cinnamon for enhanced flavor in your apple streusel cake.
  • Substitute streusel topping or cinnamon cream cheese frosting for the topping to make a crumble topping apple cake.
  • Use granulated sugar instead of brown sugar for the topping.
  • Add pecans to the cake batter AND the topping for extra crunch in your homemade apple crumb cake.
  • Substitute walnuts for the pecans.
  • Leftover apple crumb cake should be covered and stored at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • To freeze this easy apple crumb cake, remove portions from the pan, wrap in plastic wrap or foil, then place in a freezer-safe ziploc bag or container and seal tightly. The best apple crumb cake can be frozen for up to 6 months, then thawed at room temperature before enjoying.
