Description

A visually stunning and delicious Black Forest Trifle made with layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, cherries, and vanilla pudding—perfect for the holiday season!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or 1 homemade chocolate cake)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipping)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries (pitted, with juice or syrup)
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice (from the canned cherries or fresh)
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings (or grated chocolate)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake according to the box instructions or your homemade recipe. Let it cool completely.
  2. Once cooled, cut the cake into bite-sized cubes.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat the heavy cream with a mixer until it starts to thicken.
  4. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until soft peaks form.
  5. For the cherries, drain canned cherries and reserve the juice or pit and slice fresh cherries.
  6. In a bowl, mix cherries with the reserved cherry juice and let soak.
  7. Begin assembling the trifle: Start with a layer of chocolate cake cubes at the bottom of a clear trifle dish.
  8. Add a layer of cherries on top of the cake.
  9. Spread a layer of vanilla pudding over the cherries.
  10. Top with a generous layer of whipped cream.
  11. Repeat the layers until you reach the top, finishing with whipped cream.
  12. Garnish with dark chocolate shavings and optional cocoa powder.
  13. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2–4 hours before serving.
