  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (or coconut sugar as a substitute)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup dried cranberries (or raisins/cherries as replacements)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (chilled)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour as a substitute)
  • 1 cup rolled oats (quick or old-fashioned)
  • 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 1/2 cup pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare an 8×8 inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine chilled unsalted butter, flour, brown sugar, and rolled oats until crumbly. Stir in cheddar cheese and pecans.
  3. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, lemon zest, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and dried cranberries until evenly coated.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over it.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes until bubbling and golden brown.
