Description
This Slow Cooker French Onion Soup features sweet caramelized onions, savory beef broth, and gooey melted Gruyère cheese. It’s an easy, hands-off recipe that delivers amazing flavors.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 pounds yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 8 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 4 sprigs fresh thyme
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 French baguette, sliced into 1-inch rounds
- 6 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Slice onions thin and put them in your slow cooker with butter pieces spread out on top of the onions.
- Cook uncovered on high for 8-10 hours, stirring every so often, until onions are deep golden brown and sweet.
- Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, bay leaves, salt, and pepper to the slow cooker and stir everything together really well.
- Cover and cook on low for 2 hours so all the flavors blend together, and the onions get super soft.
- While the soup cooks, slice the bread into thick rounds and toast under the broiler until both sides are nice and golden.
- Take out thyme sprigs and bay leaves from the soup, then scoop hot soup into your oven-safe bowls.
- Put 1 or 2 toasted bread slices on top of each bowl and press down gently into the soup.
- Cover bread with lots of shredded Gruyère cheese, making sure all the bread is covered so it melts perfectly.
- Put bowls on a baking sheet and broil for 3-4 minutes until cheese bubbles and gets those yummy golden brown spots.
- Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve right away while the cheese is hot, melted, and super stretchy – ENJOY!!!
