- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 3 cups (360g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 4 cups peeled and diced apples (about 3 medium)
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons (16g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter
- 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: Dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in warm milk in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add melted butter, remaining sugar, salt, and egg to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Make the apple filling: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add diced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender and mixture thickens (about 8-10 minutes). Let cool slightly.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down dough and roll into a 12×18 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
- Spread apple filling evenly, leaving a 1-inch border.
- Roll dough tightly into a log from one long side. Pinch seam to seal.
- Transfer log to baking sheet and shape into an oval or ring. Pinch ends together.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Prepare vanilla glaze: Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Drizzle glaze over warm kringle. Let glaze set before serving.
Notes
- Use firm, crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for best results.
- Toast spices lightly in a dry pan for a richer flavor.
- Adjust milk in glaze for desired consistency.
- Ensure dough seam is sealed tightly to prevent filling leakage.
