- For the Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- several drops yellow gel food coloring
- For the Ganache:
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- several drops black gel food coloring
- For the Frosting:
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- Optional Decorations:
- edible gold dust or themed cake toppers
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with milk, mixing until just combined. Add yellow food coloring if using.
- Divide batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
- While cakes cool, make the ganache: heat heavy cream until simmering, pour over chocolate chips, let sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth. Add black food coloring if desired.
- Once cakes are completely cool, level them with a serrated knife.
- Assemble the cake: place a layer on a serving plate, spread with ganache, and repeat with remaining layers.
- Apply a thin crumb coat of yellow buttercream and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Frost the entire cake with yellow buttercream and drizzle with cooled ganache.
- Chill the cake for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.
