To make classic English scones, you’ll need flour, baking powder, butter, sugar, and milk. Start by sifting the flour and baking powder together in a bowl. Cut the butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and stir to combine. Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the milk. Stir the mixture until it forms a soft dough.
Once the dough is ready, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it lightly. Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick and cut it into rounds. Place the scones on a baking sheet and brush them with a little milk. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
